SK Fitness, why our classes are the perfect cross training combination.

Writer: Suzanne Harrison-KerrSuzanne Harrison-Kerr

Cross training is one of the best ways to keep your workouts exciting and challenging while reaping a ton of benefits for your body. It’s all about mixing things up and incorporating different styles of exercise into your routine, which keeps your muscles guessing and prevents you from getting bored with the same old routine.

When you think about cross training, you might picture yourself bouncing between strength training, spin classes, and circuit workouts. It’s the ultimate combo for getting stronger, faster, and more flexible without overloading any one muscle group. Strength training, like lifting weights, helps you build muscle, increase your metabolism, and get that toned look you’ve been aiming for. But if that’s all you do, your body can get used to it, and your progress might start to slow down. Enter cross training. By swapping in a spin class, you’re giving your muscles a break from lifting while still challenging your cardiovascular system. Cycling can improve endurance, tone your legs, and provide a fun way to get your heart rate up.

Then there are the circuit workouts, which mix strength and cardio, giving you the best of both worlds. You get your heart pumping with short bursts of high-intensity moves, like burpees or jump squats, followed by quick strength exercises, like push-ups or kettlebell swings. This keeps your workout dynamic and makes sure you're working multiple muscle groups, all while burning fat and boosting your endurance. Plus, circuit workouts often push you to work harder than you would on your own, which means faster results.

What makes cross training even better is the injury prevention factor. If you stick to one type of exercise, like just running or only lifting weights, you might end up overworking certain muscles, leading to injuries. Cross training helps to balance out your muscles by switching between different movements and intensity levels, which keeps you from burning out or overloading any particular muscle group. Not only does this keep you feeling fresh, but it also helps your body recover better between workouts.

One of the best parts of cross training is how it keeps you mentally engaged. If you’re someone who gets bored easily, the variety that cross training offers is a game-changer. Instead of dreading the same workout every day, you get to mix it up and look forward to different challenges each time you step into the gym. Whether it’s lifting weights, cycling through a spin class, or tackling a tough circuit, you’re always working towards something new. Plus, it feels pretty great when you start seeing improvements in both your strength and cardio ability.

In the end, cross training is all about building a well-rounded fitness routine. You get to enjoy the benefits of strength training, cardio, and endurance workouts, while also keeping your body injury-free and motivated. If you’re tired of doing the same old thing, try mixing in some different exercises and see how it can elevate your fitness game.
